Passive Heating and Cooling Methods in a Small Residence

Passive Heating and Cooling Methods Seminar @ University of Oregon

Fall 2014

Individual Work
Supervisor: John Reynolds

The aim of this project was to review one of our previous studio projects so that it would incorporate Passive Heating and Cooling Methods according to its location (Sacramento, CA), form and program.

After rigorous calculations for the most appropriate passive heating and cooling methods for the climate of Sacramento, it was found that a combination of a roof pond and direct solar gain would provide thermal comfort 365 days/year with minimal power needed. Here you can see the main changes to the original design as well as the final design of this Sacramento residence.
